Warriors star Steph Curry suffers broken left hand against Suns

The Golden State Warriors' rough start to the season got the worst possible news Wednesday night

Star guard Steph Curry suffered a broken left hand against the Phoenix Suns, the team announced. With about 8½ minutes left in the third quarter, Curry drove and collided with Suns center Aron Baynes. Curry fell to the floor, and Baynes landed on his left arm. Curry drew a foul on the play but did not shoot the free throws. He headed to the locker room, where he had X-rays that confirmed the break.

The team did not have any additional details on the injury but said Curry will undergo an MRI and CT scan Thursday to determine if surgery is necessary. Only then will the team set a time table for Curry's recovery.

"Aron Baynes came up after the game and just wanted to know how Steph was doing," said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. "You could tell he felt really bad. It's just a random basketball play, so stuff happens

The injury is a huge blow for a Warriors team already floundering a little more than a week into a new-look season after the departure of Kevin Durant. Golden State is playing without Klay Thompson, who tore his ACL during the NBA Finals in the spring and had surgery July 2. He is unlikely to play this season.

"Of course it hurts knowing that Steph Curry's down," said Warriors rookie Eric Paschall, who had a team-high 20 points in his first career start Wednesday. "... That's a very, very valuable piece of our team, but I feel like we're going to stay positive."

The Warriors could use some positivity. They started 0-2 with blowout losses to the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder. They picked up their first win Monday against the New Orleans Pelicans, but a Golden State defense that is one of the worst in the league allowed 123 points.

A third consecutive poor defensive performance had Draymond Green throwing cold water on the win. "We're still not a very good team," Green said Monday.
